FAQ

Q. Does Carver students wear uniforms?
A. No. Carver students do not wear uniforms.  We do however follow the dress code outlined in the Lake County Schools Code of Student Conduct. You may review the Code of Student Conduct. 

Q. What is the cell phone policy for Carver?
A. The Lake County School Board recognizes that students and families may require the use of cell phones before or after school.  Cell phones MUST be turned off, out of sight, and not in use on school grounds at any time during the school day or during dismissal (8:50-4:00). If a student needs to use the phone, they must go to the main office or their grade level office to use the phone. Cell phones are prohibited in the car rider line and in the bus loop area. Students that carry a cell phone on campus must remember it is solely their responsibility to keep up with their phone. Carver Middle will not be held responsible for any lost or stolen cell phones. Students are also prohibited from wearing headphones, earbuds or air pods. 

Q. Are students allowed to carry backpacks/bookbags?
A. For the 2023-2024 school year,  students are allowed to have clear/mesh backpacks. We encourage students to purchase backpacks that has a compartment to store their Chromebook. Students that do not have clear/mesh backpacks will have to store their backpacks in a school provided locker. This year, lockers are free of charge. 

Q. Are students allowed to have parties or bring food for other students?
A. Class parties are not allowed in school.  Food, drinks, ice, snacks, gum, candy, etc. are NOT allowed in classrooms.  No food may be ordered from outside vendors to be delivered to the school. 

Q. Does Carver provide breakfast?
A. Yes. Students who are interested in breakfast can report to the cafeteria at 8:50 when the gate opens. For the 2023-2024 school year, every student receives free breakfast and lunch.

Q. What time does school begin?
A. School begins at 9:00 a.m and ends at 4:00 p.m (Wednesday 3:00 p.m). We have several bells that the students will need to listen for. When students arrive on campus, they will go straight to either breakfast or the holding area for their grade level.  Students interested in getting breakfast will report to the cafeteria first then report to class. We begin our staggered dismissal around 4:00 p.m. Students need to know how they will get home each day.

Q. Can my student ride a bicycle to school?
A. Yes. Students are allowed to ride their bicycle to school. They must use the walker's gate off of Beecher Street and can not ride on campus. They must use the bicycle rack to park their bicycle and they must have their own chain and lock. Carver Middle will not be held responsible for any lost or stolen bicycles.

Q. My child is sick, do I need to call and let the school know they won’t be coming in?
A. No. Upon your student returning to school, send a note with your student. Please make sure your student’s first and last name are legible. The note should be turned in to the front office or your students homeroom teacher. 

Q. My student was checked out for an appointment. Can I write a note to excuse them?
A. No, please obtain a note from the doctor’s office showing that they were seen on that date at that time. Most offices in the area are familiar with this requirement and will be happy to provide one.

Q. How can I contact my child’s teacher?
A. Getting a phone call to a teacher between classes is difficult. We may transfer a call to their voicemail or take a message and give to the teacher at a later time in the day. The best way to reach a teacher is by email. Your student’s planner can also be used to communicate directly with your student’s teachers.

Q. When is Winter Break/Spring Break/Report Cards, etc.?
A. This information is listed on the student calendars which can be found on the Lake County Public Schools website, https://www.lake.k12.fl.us

Q. I need to pick up my student early. Can you have him/her waiting for me in the front office?
A. No, our front office is a busy place, with many adults coming and going. Unless we suspect something contagious, the student will wait in class until a parent or someone authorized by you arrive and show proper identification. We will then call them to the office. Students will not be signed out of school after 3:30 (2:30 on Wednesdays); they will need to wait until regular dismissal at 3:55 (2:55 Wednesdays).

Q. How do I become a chaperone or volunteer?  
A. We proudly welcome parents and guardians who wish to volunteer at our school. Please visit the district website to become a volunteer. 

Q. What is a prearranged absence, and how do I get one?  
A. A prearranged absence form can be obtained from the Front Office if you know you are going to be out of town for any length of time and your child will miss school.  You will need to fill out the form, return it to the Front Office or teacher and then it may be approved by the teacher and principal.

Q. What must I do when I visit the campus? 
A. You must have a photo ID and sign in at the Front Office to receive a Visitor sticker. Visitors (Adults) with no photo ID will not be allowed to enter campus. 

Q. My child is going to a friend’s house after school. Can he/she ride on the friend’s bus?
A. No, Lake County Transportation requires that students only ride their assigned bus.

Q. Where do I park when I come to the school?
A. Visitor parking spots are located in the front parking lot. You must enter the campus using the main entrance off Red Raider road closest to the Leesburg Recreational Center. 

Q. What happens if my child gets sick at school?
A. Your child will be sent to the nurse or their grade level office to call home if the nurse is unavailable. The student will be sent back to class until someone arrives to pick up the student. 

Q. Can I come and eat lunch with my student?
A. Yes! We welcome you to come eat lunch during your students lunch time. If you are unsure of their lunch time, please call the school before arriving. Please note, you will be allowed to eat lunch with your student only. All adults that come with you must have a photo ID.

Q. Can I drop items off that my student left at home?
A. No.  The main office will not accept any items left at home. 

Q. Does Carver have a before or after school program?
A. No. Outside of sports, club meetings and tutoring, Carver does not have a program. However, the Boys and Girls Club next door has an awesome program available for school aged students. You can visit https://bgccf.org or call them at 352-787-0053 for more information. 

Q. Does Carver have resources to help families financially?
A. No. Although we would love to be able to meet the needs of those in need, we simply do not have the means to do so. There are many resources available throughout Lake County that could probably point families in the right direction. Be Free Lake has a Community Resource Guide with loads of resources.
