Mr. Abney,
Potential Specialist

Mr.  Abney was born in Lake County. He attended Central State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree. He continued his education attending Florida Atlantic University where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. Mr. Abney’s teaching experience is extensive. He began in Broward County where he taught both elementary and middle school. 

Mr. Abney has a relentless desire for each and every student to achieve and succeed. His motto is, “ Move Forward with Confidence “... once they believe they can succeed, achievement and success will be theirs! Mr. Abney looks forward to working together with parents and students.. together instilling pride, motivation and a love of knowledge!

Mr. Belmarez,
Potential Specialist
6th & 7th Grade Discipline

Mr. Belmarez spent 20 years in Law Enforcement, retiring as Chief of Police in 2007. Mr. Belmarez was a Criminal Justice Professor for 6 years before joining Lake County School District in 2014 at Leesburg High School where he taught Special Education for 8 years before becoming Dean in 2022. Mr. Belmarez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies, a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, a Master’s degree in Emergency Management, a Master’s degree in Education and a Specialist degree in Leadership & Accountability. Mr. Belmarez is a Volunteer Deputy Sheriff and a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. 

Ms. Thomas,
Potential Specialist

Ms. Thomas was born and raised in South Florida. She attended Lake Sumter Community College earning her Associates Degree in Internet Services before enrolling at Saint Leo University. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. In 2017, she earned a Master’s of Science Degree in Education, focusing on Innovation and Technology and Personalized Learning from Capella University.

Beginning her career at Carver Middle school in 2011 as a substitute teacher, Ms. Thomas later accepted a permanent position as the Literacy Paraprofessional and later served as ESE Clerk then Data Clerk for nearly four years.
